The Women, Child, Senior Citizen & Divyangjan Development Department, Mangan, successfully organised an Awareness-cum-Walkathon programme for senior citizens of Mangan District under the Atal Vayo Abhyudaya Yojana (AVAY). The programme commenced with a walkathon from the DAC premises to the Community Hall, Mangan, followed by an awareness session. The initiative aimed to promote active ageing, enhance health awareness, and disseminate information on various government welfare schemes for senior citizens.

The programme was graced by Ms Tshering Doma Bhutia, Counsellor, MNP, as the Chief Guest, and Shri Anant Jain, IAS, District Collector, Mangan, as the Special Guest. Their presence greatly encouraged the participants and underscored the importance of the initiative.

Resource persons from different departments delivered informative sessions. From the Health Department, Mr Ongyal Tshering Lepcha, ABDM Project Coordinator, along with officials from the District Hospital,

including Ms Chusom Lepcha, generated awareness on ABHA ID, PMJAY, and the benefits of the ABHA Card. On-the-spot generation of ABHA Cards was facilitated for the participants. Mr Sonam Namgyal Bhutia, Nutrition Inspector, sensitised the senior citizens on balanced nutrition and healthy dietary practices in old age.

Social Welfare Officer highlighted various welfare schemes available for senior citizens under the Social Welfare Department. Ms Sonam Laden Lachungpa, DD-cum- CDPO, elaborated on the objectives of AVAY and shared practical guidance on maintaining health, safety, and security in later years. Addressing the gathering, Shri Anant Jain, IAS, DC Mangan, explained in detail the provisions of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, and encouraged senior citizens to remain active, informed, and healthy.

The Chief Guest expressed appreciation for the initiative and encouraged senior citizens to adopt healthy lifestyles and make effective use of government welfare schemes. The programme also included recreational activities and games for senior citizens, followed by distribution of gifts. The event concluded successfully with active participation and positive feedback from the beneficiaries.

Further, necessary documents like Aadhar Card, ration card were collected from the beneficiaries to ensure proper verification and for the distribution of free assistive equipments for the senior citizens.
Overall, the programme effectively achieved its objectives of awareness generation, health promotion, and encouragement of active ageing under the Atal Vayo Abhyudaya Yojana.
