  • Observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Walkathon
    West Bengal | 15-06-2026 03:30 PM to 15-06-2026 05:00 PM
  • Jamuna Nagar, Kolkata 99, Kolkata, West Bengal - 700099

Date : 15th June, 2026

The Calcutta Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology (CMIG) is supported by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE), Govt of India. As per National Mandate, CMIG has been encouraged to observe ‘WEAAD’ on 15th June,2026.

CMIG organised a ‘Walkathon’ to promote respect, inclusion and care for senior citizens. A wide scale participation in the event included participants from senior citizens, community members, health care professionals among other pertinent stakeholders. Elder abuse encompasses physical, emotional, financial components which remain severely underreported. WHO has recognised 1 in 24 elder abuse cases which have been documented throughout several years. According to United Nation General Assembly (UNGA), World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) serves as a call to action in order to protect the rights, safety and dignity of the elderly. CMIG has identified social isolation as one of the major risk factors for elderly abuse.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Indrani Chakravarty, Director of CMIG stated- "Elder abuse often remains hidden and underreported due to fear of retaliation and stigmatization. Through this Walkathon, we aim to raise public awareness and inspire collective responsibility to ensure that older persons live with dignity, respect, and protection. A society that values and cares for its elders is a stronger and more compassionate society. Moreover, we are involving our Day Care beneficiaries to be the part of the Walkathon".

CMIG invited citizens, institutions, and community leaders to join hands in recognizing the contributions of older persons and fostering an environment where they can live free from abuse, neglect, and discrimination.
