One Day Workshop on Elderly Issues

A one-day workshop on elderly issues was successfully organized by the Regional Resource and Training Centre (RRTC) at the Vaivakawn Cultural Centre-cum-Auditorium, Aizawl. The programme aimed to create awareness, enhance knowledge, and promote the well-being of senior citizens by addressing key aspects of ageing, including health, rights, and active living. A total of 170 senior citizen members from different localities of Aizawl West actively participated in the workshop, reflecting strong community engagement and interest in the welfare of older persons.
The programme was chaired by Ms. Esther Lalthachawii, Project Manager, who guided the proceedings and ensured the smooth conduct of the event. The introductory address was delivered by Mr. K. Lalnghinglova, Board Member of Mission Foundation Movement, who highlighted the importance of such initiatives in empowering senior citizens and improving their quality of life. He emphasized the organization’s commitment to supporting older persons through awareness programmes, capacity building, and access to essential services.
The technical sessions covered a wide range of topics relevant to the ageing population. Ms. Lalremtluangi, Tutor at MFM School of Nursing, delivered an informative session on common diseases among the elderly, including hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and other age-related conditions. She also discussed preventive measures, early detection, and available treatment options, encouraging participants to adopt healthy lifestyles and seek timely medical care.
Mr. Lalremsiama, Fitness Trainer, conducted a session on physical exercise, emphasizing the importance of maintaining regular physical activity even in old age. He demonstrated simple and safe exercises suitable for senior citizens and provided practical guidance on exercises that could be performed at home without the need for special equipment, thereby promoting independence and physical well-being.
Mr. Lalbiaksanga, Team Leader of the National Helpline for Senior Citizens, delivered a session on the rights and entitlements of older persons. He elaborated on various government schemes, legal safeguards, and support mechanisms available to senior citizens, and encouraged them to be aware of their rights and to seek assistance whenever required.
Further enriching the programme, Mr. K.D. Lalthiamsama, Lecturer at Laithangpuii College of Pharmacy, spoke on the rational use of medicines among senior citizens. He highlighted the importance of adhering to prescribed medications, understanding correct dosages, and avoiding self-medication, particularly among older adults with multiple health conditions.
The workshop concluded with a valedictory address by Mr. R. Vanlalzauva, Director of Mission Foundation Movement. In his remarks, he expressed appreciation for the enthusiastic participation of the senior citizens and the valuable contributions of the resource persons. He reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to promoting the dignity, health, and overall well-being of older persons and called for continued collaboration among stakeholders to ensure a supportive and age-friendly environment for senior citizens in the community.
Overall, the workshop proved to be highly beneficial in enhancing awareness and empowering senior citizens with knowledge and practical information essential for healthy and active ageing.
