  • 03 Day Programme for Dementia Care & Management

1. Introduction

A programme on Dementia Care & Management was organized by RRTC, Mission Foundation Movement on 5th February-7th February 2026 at Bethlehem Venglai Hall, Aizawl, Mizoram. The programme aimed to raise awareness about dementia, improve caregiving skills, and promote better support systems for elderly persons suffering from cognitive disorders.

Dementia has become an increasing concern worldwide, particularly among the ageing population. In communities where family members are the primary caregivers, it is important to equip them with proper knowledge and skills to care for persons living with dementia. The programme brought together community members, caregivers, social workers, and health professionals to discuss practical approaches for dementia care and management.

2. Inaugural Session

The programme began with an inaugural session attended by distinguished guests, participants, and organizers. The programme was graced by Chief Guest C. Lalsawivunga, Hon’ble Minister, Art & Culture Department, Government of Mizoram.

In his address, the Chief Guest highlighted the importance of caring for elderly citizens and emphasized the need for community awareness regarding dementia. He acknowledged the efforts of RRTC, Mission Foundation Movement in organizing programmes that promote the welfare and dignity of senior citizens. He also encouraged families and communities to provide compassionate care and support to elderly persons living with dementia.

3. Objectives of the Programme

The main objectives of the programme were:

  • To increase public awareness about dementia and its impact
  • To educate caregivers and community members on dementia care
  • To promote early detection and management of dementia
  • To strengthen community support for elderly persons
  • To encourage better caregiving practices for persons living with dementia

4. Participants

The programme witnessed the participation of caregivers, elderly persons, community leaders, NGO representatives, and social workers. Participants actively engaged in discussions and shared their experiences regarding elderly care and dementia-related challenges.

5. Programme Sessions

The programme included several informative sessions covering important aspects of dementia care and management.

Understanding Dementia

The session introduced participants to dementia, including its causes, symptoms, and stages. Participants learned about the difference between normal ageing and dementia, as well as the importance of early recognition.

Caregiving Techniques

This session focused on practical caregiving approaches such as:

  • Effective communication with dementia patients
  • Managing behavioural and psychological symptoms
  • Creating a safe and supportive environment for elderly persons

Participants were encouraged to share their caregiving experiences and challenges.

Community Support and Awareness

Another important session highlighted the role of families, communities, and local organizations in supporting dementia patients. Participants were informed about the importance of empathy, patience, and community cooperation in caring for elderly individuals.

7. Outcome of the Programme

The programme successfully increased awareness and understanding of dementia among participants. It also helped strengthen the knowledge and capacity of caregivers and community members to support persons living with dementia.

Participants expressed appreciation for the informative sessions and highlighted the need for more such awareness programmes in the future.

8. Conclusion

The programme on Dementia Care & Management organized by RRTC, Mission Foundation Movement was successful in achieving its objectives. The presence of the Hon’ble Chief Guest added significance to the event and encouraged greater attention toward issues affecting the elderly population.

The programme contributed to improving awareness, strengthening caregiving practices, and promoting a compassionate approach to dementia care within the community.
