Purulia, often described as “God’s own drawing over nature,” is a picturesque district of West Bengal, blessed with hills, green forests rich in flora and fauna, cascading waterfalls and colourful flowers that naturally promote mental well-being. However, behind this natural beauty lies a harsh reality marked by widespread poverty, extreme climatic conditions and inadequate health infrastructure, all of which contribute to significant health challenges among the local population.
With the support of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India and under the initiative of CMIG, a health camp was organised in a remote tribal village named Nanduara (Bagdi Para), Pahargora, Ward No. 10, P.S. Raghunathpur, situated at the foothills of the renowned Joychandi Pahar.
The expressions on the villagers’ faces reflected their daily struggle for survival. During interactions, the medical team enquired about their health status, food availability, dietary habits and daily lifestyle. Some of the younger residents shared that due to food scarcity, they sometimes depend on wild animals such as wild boar and porcupine for sustenance. The presence of wild dogs and foxes in and around the village further highlights the vulnerability and isolation of the area.
Our primary objective was to extend medical support and offer moments of relief and reassurance to the community. The medical team conducted health check-ups, provided necessary medicines and offered guidance on health and nutrition. Most villagers were found to be suffering from age-related and chronic conditions such as COPD, hypertension, low back pain, osteoarthritis, hearing impairment, insomnia, loss of appetite and vertigo. A notable concern observed was severe muscle degeneration, largely attributed to prolonged nutritional deficiency.
The team not only addressed immediate medical needs but also engaged with the villagers to understand their pressing requirements and challenges. In return for our efforts, we were rewarded with warm smiles and heartfelt gratitude from the community—small yet deeply meaningful moments of connection. They sincerely acknowledge and thank the Government of India and CMIG for their invaluable support in making this outreach programme possible and for enabling us to serve one of the most underserved populations in this remote region of Purulia.
