  • Aizawl, Mizoram, Aizawl, Mizoram - 796005

Date : 8th October, 2025

In celebration of the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) 2025, supported by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, a programme was organized by the Regional Resource Training Centre (RRTC) at the Synod Conference Centre in Aizawl, Mizoram. The event was conducted with the objective of promoting the well-being, dignity, and active participation of senior citizens in society.

The programme commenced with an inaugural session graced by the Chief Guest, Lalbiakzama, Hon’ble Speaker of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly. In his address, he emphasized the importance of caring for the elderly and acknowledged their invaluable contributions to society. He also highlighted the need for collective efforts from families, communities, and institutions to ensure that senior citizens lead a life of dignity, respect, and security.

The programme featured a variety of activities aimed at awareness, engagement, and empowerment of senior citizens. Key highlights included the administering of pledges to promote respect and care for the elderly, and an awareness session on the National Helpline for Senior Citizens, which informed participants about available support services. A health and wellness session was conducted to educate attendees on maintaining physical and mental health, followed by a customized fitness training session specifically designed for senior citizens to encourage safe and regular physical activity.

In addition, a talk series on ageing with dignity provided valuable insights into emotional well-being, social inclusion, and coping with the challenges of ageing. Cultural engagement was promoted through a folk song competition, allowing participants to showcase their talents and celebrate local traditions. Counselling sessions on healthy lifestyle practices were also organized, offering guidance on nutrition, mental health, and overall well-being.

The programme witnessed an active participation of 245 senior citizens and community members, creating a vibrant, inclusive, and interactive environment. The enthusiastic involvement of participants reflected the relevance and impact of the initiative. The programme concluded successfully with positive feedback from attendees, reaffirming the importance of such events in strengthening awareness, promoting healthy ageing, and fostering a supportive community for senior citizens.
