Calcutta Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology (CMIG) in collaboration with the Champa Mahila Society of Sundarbans in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, organized health camp and wellness program in Shibganj. The main objective of this program was to reach out to marginalized senior citizens who have limited access to healthcare services. The program included the distribution of blankets, general health check-ups and medicine supplies where health facilities are hard to reach. The event was attended by local doctors, paramedical staffs, officials from the Champa Mahila Society and representatives from CMIG, Kolkata.
The Sundarbans, one of the most remote and geographically challenging regions of West Bengal, is characterized by scattered islands, difficult waterwaysand limited connectivity. The people living in these areas face severe challenges in accessing basic healthcare services due to the absence of nearby hospitals, health centers and regular availability of medicines. Most villagers depend on long and costly travel by boat to reach the nearest health facility, which is often not feasible, especially for elderly persons. In this context, CMIG was organized a health camp in a remote area of the Sundarbans with the objective of providing basic healthcare services and free medicines to the underserved population. The camp focused on addressing common health problems such as fever, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal disorders, skin diseases, joint painand general weaknesswhich are prevalent due to poor living conditions, saline water and lack of sanitation. Blankets were distributed to 197 marginalized senior citizens of the locality who are extremely needy and does not possess any warm clothes in this winter season.
Qualified medical professionals examined the patients, provided necessary medical advice and distributed free medicines as per individual health needs. The health camp received an overwhelming response from the local population, reflecting the urgent need for regular healthcare services in the Sundarbans. The initiative helped reduce immediate health risks and provided relief to people who otherwise have no access to medicines or medical consultation.Such outreach programs are crucial in bridging the healthcare gap in remote and marginalized areas like the Sundarbans and contribute significantly towards improving the overall health and well-being of the community.
