Ageing is a natural process encompassing physical, psychological, and social changes over time. With the global population of people aged 65 and older expected to more than double from 761 million in 2021 to 1.6 billion by 2050 (World Social Report 2023- UNDESA), addressing the myriad problems faced by the elderly, such as health issues, social isolation, and financial insecurity, is essential. This irreversible trend, driven by demographic transitions toward longer lives and smaller families, is occurring even in youthful countries. By 2050, 1 in 6 people globally will be 65 or older, up from 1 in 10 in 2021 (World Social Report 2023- UNDESA). As fertility rates fall, the proportion of younger people declines, while the shares of working-age adults and older individuals increase, driven by longer, healthier lifespans. Healthy ageing emphasizes maintaining physical, mental, and social well-being as people grow older, enhancing their quality of life. Social work, particularly gerontological social work, plays a crucial role in supporting the elderly.
