The International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 was observed on 21st June 2026 with enthusiastic participation of senior citizens. The theme of IDY 2026, "Yoga for Healthy Ageing" highlighted the importance of yoga in promoting physical health, mental well-being, active ageing and independence among older adults.

The International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 programme for senior citizens was conducted in accordance with the Yoga Protocol (CYP) prescribed by the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. The session commenced with Prayer and Om Chanting, followed by Loosening Practices (Sukshma Vyayama) to prepare the body for yoga. Participants then performed a series of age-friendly yoga postures, including standing, sitting and supine asanas under the guidance of trained instructors.

As part of the awareness component of the programme, Dr. Indrani Chakravarty conducted an informative session highlighting the significance of yoga in promoting healthy ageing, physical fitness, mental well-being, stress management, and social engagement among senior citizens. A second interactive session was conducted by Mr. Ipsito Chakravarty, who discussed the holistic benefits of yoga and mindfulness practices for older adults.

The session further included Pranayama practices such as Kapalabhati (where suitable), Anulom-Vilom and Bhramari to enhance respiratory health and mental well-being. This was followed by Meditation (Dhyana) and concluded with Shanti Path/Prayer, promoting inner peace and holistic wellness. Special care was taken to ensure that all practices were safe, comfortable, and suitable for senior citizens.

A total of 36 senior citizens participated in the programme. The participants actively engaged in the yoga session and expressed their appreciation for the initiative.
