1. Introduction
RRTC, Mission Foundation Movement organized a Three-Day Programme on Dementia Care and Management from 29th to 31st March 2026 at Shikshan Hall, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. The programme was organized to create awareness about dementia and strengthen the knowledge and practical caregiving skills of individuals involved in the care and support of elderly persons.
Dementia is an important ageing-related concern that affects memory, thinking, behaviour, and the ability to perform everyday activities. The programme therefore focused on promoting early recognition, appropriate care, and a compassionate approach towards persons living with dementia.
2. Objectives
The main objectives of the programme were:
- To create awareness and improve understanding of dementia.
- To familiarize participants with the early signs, symptoms, and progression of dementia.
- To strengthen the skills of caregivers and community-level workers.
- To provide practical knowledge on the care and management of persons living with dementia.
- To promote family and community support for elderly persons.
3. Programme Proceedings
Day 1 – Understanding Dementia
The first day focused on the basic concepts of dementia, including its meaning, causes, symptoms, risk factors, and different stages. Participants were also sensitized to the difference between normal ageing and dementia. Interactive discussions helped participants understand common challenges faced by elderly persons experiencing cognitive decline.
Day 2 – Dementia Care and Management
The second day focused on practical aspects of dementia care. Sessions covered effective communication, management of behavioural changes, personal hygiene, nutrition, daily routines, and safety measures. Participants were encouraged to share their experiences and discuss practical challenges encountered while caring for elderly persons.
Day 3 – Family and Community Support
The final day emphasized the role of families, caregivers, and communities in supporting persons living with dementia. Discussions included caregiver stress, emotional support, social inclusion, rehabilitation, and the importance of maintaining dignity and independence among elderly persons. The programme concluded with a feedback and interaction session.
4. Methodology
The programme followed a participatory and interactive approach. The sessions included lectures, presentations, group discussions, practical demonstrations, experience sharing, and question-and-answer sessions. This approach enabled participants to relate the training content to their own caregiving experiences.
5. Target Group
The programme was intended for caregivers, family members of elderly persons, community volunteers, social workers, NGO representatives, health workers, and other persons involved in elderly care and support services.
6. Key Outcomes
The programme helped participants to:
- Develop a better understanding of dementia and its symptoms.
- Gain practical knowledge of dementia caregiving.

7. Conclusion
The Three-Day Programme for Dementia Care and Management conducted at Shikshan Hall, Itanagar, was successfully completed with active participation and interaction among the attendees. The programme contributed to strengthening awareness and caregiving capacity and highlighted the importance of family and community involvement in dementia care.
Through such capacity-building initiatives, RRTC, Mission Foundation Movement continues to promote healthy ageing, dignified living, and better support systems for senior citizens across the region.
